British Theatre - EP 1

embedded from the bands bandcamp page... it only costs 50p... you know you want to..........

Bawl - Year Zero

I had the pleasure to see Bawl at my local venue the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth, iv no idea who they were supporting but i'm reasonably sure it sometime around 1996... it may have been Gene? it may have actually been about 20 or so other bands .. i should write these things down !!

Bawl had some rather lazy "new Smiths" hype thrown at them and although you can possibly hear something its pretty far fetched... still Year Zero is alright and worth a listen, the singer Mark Cullen has got a bit of a reputation in his native Ireland as a witty, acerbic and talented songwriter, he has released 3 albums under the moniker of Pony Club , you should check them out...

Nilon Bombers - Bird

Mid 90's britpop !

A juxtaposition of mass cultural shift and fantastic music etc.... and the era of mass under achievement by so many...

i will let you decide where Nilon Bombers fit into the equation.. If i tell you they supported Carter USM then i'm alright with them. Even if Carter were firmly on the way down by the time that happened.. such is life!

Flying Saucer Attack - Flying Saucer Attack

Bristol's Flying Saucer Attack... you know when an album is self titled do i type the title like iv done here or should i just put ST?? empires have fallen on such decisions.......

So you like Godpeed, the Mary Chain and MBV ? of course you do...... who doesn't... well i think you are probably going to like Flying Saucer Attack...

This has a Krautrock edge and takes off swathed in feedback and fuzz, they cover media darlings Suede and give there "The Drowners" single a suitable arse kicking.... this got the band plenty of press although they didn't seem to really care... go find the beauty hidden in chaos.

Moonshake - Eva Luna

Dave Callaghan and Margret Fielder...what a sensational noise you created...  Wow... This is like 3 albums in one, Multi layered instrumentals overlaid with noisy guitar... think My Bloody Valentine for any sort of reference, The band were signed to Too Pure records... Home of PJ Harvey and Th' Faith Healers...

The two main creative forces of the band apparently didn't get on that well.... that's usually a recipe for success 99% of times !

Marion - This World And Body

Marion are back from the dead.... quite literally !

Brit pop also-rans? i dont think so and this album goes a long way to prove why Marion were more than late gatecrashers to the scene, recorded and released in the mid 90's Marion imploded soon after and disappeared from trace... until now that is!

The band have reformed ( where have i heard that lately) and now are hopefully free from the chemical distractions that blighted their early career they should do ok, live the band were fantastic, i had the dubious pleasure of seeing a band called Northern Uproar support Marion at Portsmouth Uni...  The same night The Chemical Brothers were tearing it up at South Parade Pier... choices choices!!

For the tour that Marion have planned now the mighty and majestic Exit Calm are on first... get there early... and stay late.... a great night out

Credit To The Nation - Take Dis

Credit To The Nation have reformed, if you were lucky enough to have been at the Endorse It festival in Dorset 2011 you might have caught them live

Live was really how i came about them , a debut single being played on Peel might have got them a record deal but gigs with Manic Street Preachers, Blaggers ITA and Chumbawamba brought them to the wider nations attention. MC Fusion, as Matty Hanson preferred to be called aligned himself with Chumbawamba's sense of political Agit prop and anti sexism / racism / homophobic attitude and disrespect for authority... never a bad thing if you ask me..

Th' Faith Healers - Lido

Th' Faith Healers.... Th' Camden Lurch !

Music defined by the dancing of your audience.. brilliant... I think it might have been Steve Lamaque in his role as live music editor of the NME who christened the term. For me krautrock and shoegaze are the key references and influences here, The band cover a Can song on this too which is always a good thing, if done well of course... no one should desecrate the grave of Can !!

Tom Cullinan the bands guitarist went on to form Quickspace who iv written about previously and Joe Dilworth the drummer worked with Stereolab.

The High - Somewhere Soon

Its not real surprise that The High followed the path well trodden by the Stone Roses, Andy Cousins the bands guitar slinger was formally a member of the roses and it really shows!

Lumped in with the madchester scene and with early singles produced by the legend that was Martin Hannett The high ticked all the boxes..... jangly guitar...... slightly disinterested lyrics and singing voice...... epic loopy drums... tales of legendary drug taking...... madchester by number might be doing it a slight disservice as actually it stands the test of time.

This is my world and i will live in it !!
