The Wedding Present - Live @ San Diego Casbah 1st April 2010

An absolutely superb set from Leeds finest and a great way to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their classic "Bizzaro" album than to play the whole thing through in order. This is a recording of the first date of the North American leg of their tour. I got to see the tour at the Wedgewood rooms in Portsmouth,  Check out the website for more details.

Northside - 2nd Album Demo's

Here in all there glory are the 2nd album demo's from derided madchester chancer's Northside.... I actually thought they were ok but were always cast as a second rate Happy Mondays... somewhat unfairly as they had a few decent tunes and this would have made a pretty decent record

Unfortunately it comes as one file so so split tracks and no track listing..... enjoy anyway !!

The Exposed - In the Face of Resistance

In The Face of Resistance” is the debut album from the British, D.I.Y. punk band The Exposed. Now, they may not be as well known as some of the big punk acts dominating the scene like NOFX or Bad Religion but trust me, this release proves they should be. With catchy, simple songs filling up the tracklist varying from poppy ska tunes, to punk rock anthems that sound like Rancid with catchy Bouncing Souls’ style choruses, this album will have you begging for more.

Drugdealer Cheerleader - Enjoy The Time You Waste

Anyone for some glam sleeze rock? Hell yea!!

How about a band that are unashamedly flying the flag for joyful, pogotastic, balls-out rock and roll? One with the soul of Guns N Roses, the spirit of Motley Crue with the glam of The New York Dolls? But all rolled into a new kind of good-time rock for the 21st Century? Yes? Look no further then and welcome, in a very real sense, to Drugdealer Cheerleader. Its like hair metal never went away

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

It's sunny outside.. perfect for a bit of the fanclub i think

Teenage Fanclub emerged from a fraternal milieu centred on the Scottish town of Bellshill. A common love of pop tradition bound the quartet together and elements of their mentors abound on this collection. Neil Young and Big Star are obvious reference points, but the Fannies are not merely Byrds copyists. Dizzy melodies, long-hair guitar and unpretentiousness abound, the set's attraction ultimately residing in its cumulative, carefree charm. An impishness enhances the entire proceedings; only the churlish can resist it’s obvious attractions. Since this release they have been sorely taken for granted and have become an institution rather than stars.

Emptifish - Branksmere Sessions

Emptifish 1983 - 1987 - By Nick Beat. I'd heard about 'Emptifish' while running an illegal drinking den 'The Trash Cavern Nightclub' in Waverly Road, Southsea. These guys were somehow too hot for the regular concertgoer and I decided to keep a distance from the craziness of their antics. As time progressed the band built up such a strong following including many young and attractive girls, 700-800 turning up at venues that held only 200-300 that eventually they became the talk of the South Coast with their musical hybrid of surf/punk and early "Beatles", surprising many in the aftermath of punk rock. At this stage I became interested as I could either see glory or destruction around the corner. As the year passed by I contacted the boys and tried to coax them into a deal. They had charisma and charm but their own burgeoning success led them to confidence and belief in their own destiny. Bigger venues followed in their own town, but at this point a group of notorious football hooligans known as the 6.57 crew latched on to the group. They showed up at the Rock Gardens Pavilion in front of a huge sold out crowd, a fight broke out during the first song this was between Punks, Psychobillys and a mob of the football crew. The gig was abandoned. I guided the band to play further a field, securing gigs in London and the Home Counties. At this point the News headlines were for all the wrong reasons, many venues were trashed in this period. The band took no part in this violence; it was a mixture of their raucous edgy music and the clash of youth cultures. At this point I would have promoted the boys infamy and gone National but the boys just carried on regardless. The Band enjoyed the notoriety; this would ultimately lead to their downfall, not in popularity but the opportunity of playing anywhere. Playing away from Portsmouth should have been a relief for the band but at each venue a huge following would materialize, at one gig with three record producers who had hoped to sign the band, witnessed another huge fight in the second song and another great opportunity was missed. The band were now too hot to handle by me, clubs and record companies and had now come under the gaze of the police, the band pleaded they had no part in the violence but they were seen as the cause, an outright ban was put in place. The boys fought the law but the law won! A few underground gigs took place under alias' "The Manta Rays" and "The Ambassadors", but these again, were marred with violence. The band split and went their own ways travelling the world fulfilling other ambitions. Emptifish played over 200 gigs from 1983 – 1987 to enthusiastic audiences, sometimes a bit too enthusiastic. They wrote and performed approximately 70 of their own songs and released two EP’s in limited numbers on Crystal Records, now very rare. These records were often heard on the late John Peels night time show. They recently reformed for a one off gig and played on an old Napoleonic fort in the English Channel, The charisma of the band is still there, they showed off their legendary moves, the crowd lapped it up - it was like they had never left us - good luck lads, Nick Beat Emptifish - By Nick Beat

Reuben - In Nothing We Trust

Reuben were at the forefront of new British rock during the mid 2000's, Original, loud and funny Reuben were from the hotbed of rock.......err ok Farnbourgh and were contempories of bands such as Hundred Reasons and Vex Red. Front man Jamie Lenman effectively ran the band, In Nothing We Trust was there third album and best imho, guest staring Frank Turner no less it took them to sold out venues up and down the UK, unfortunately the pressure of full time jobs, running the band and record label became too much and the band split shortly after release, A DVD was released around the same time entitled "What happens in Aldershot stays in Aldershot" its since been deleted and copies change hands for silly money but its well worth tracking down

Arab Strap - The Week Never Starts Around Here

Saying goodbye to Arab Strap hurt more than any other break up. As a band they had grown older and wiser alongside their fanbase, soundtracking everything from high school crushes, dealing with abortion, raucous nights out and waking up in the early morning sunlight with the person you love in your arms. But the reason for the profound sense of loss when they left was simply that there has never been anybody else like them. Too often in music, bands get referred to as being ‘unique’, but this Scottish duo genuinely were that most rare of things. Middleton pulled the strings musically - improving ten fold with each subsequent release yet always maintaining that mystique to the songs’ atmosphere – whilst Moffat supplied the words and tone of voice, always pitching it perfectly between humorous (but often cynical) banter and painfully honest admissions of one’s own faults. People regularly remark of bands putting themselves into their work, but within Moffat’s words lie the entire outline of his life to date.
Over their career of 11 years, the band outgrew their initial miserablist mistag and became a relatively unsung national treasure for both their recorded work and live shows. And so it seems right that this, their debut album, should now be reissued.
The Week Never Starts Round Here is a perfect snapshot of a Nineties indie band finding their feet. Some songs here hint at what was to come; ‘Blood’ still sounds delightful, walking a fine line between amusing and scathing ("My last lover’s playing with her new man now / It’s only three weeks we’ve been apart / They sat together and he sent her flowers / Well he can fucking keep that fickle disco tart"), whilst ‘Kate Moss’ still sounds remarkably fresh, with its opening statement of shock that someone could not find the model "pretty". Others jar a little with the rest of the band's output, but are still wholly decent indie romps when taken outside of that realm, such as the booming reverberating-snare used on the slightly eerie ‘The Clearing’ and the whimsical ‘General Plea to a Girlfriend’, complete with its whistle solo. It’s particularly interesting hearing the live renditions on the second disc alongside these studio versions, with the results sounding fuller and more rounded, even at this early stage.
But despite the band going on to better it, even 14 years on, it sounds utterly mesmerising. The accolades belong to the studio recording. Building from a simple guitar line until the starring drum beat expands into a wonderful climactic indie anthem, it captured the hearts of Peel, the label bosses and most music fans of the time; because it totally ‘got’ what being a twentysomething in this country was like during your downtime; nights out with your friends, some drinking out, some watching of The Simpsons, some passing interest in the opposite sex and a bit of late night cheese misuse. It’s the song that still defines the band to many, and one that certainly raised the bar of expectation surrounding the band such is it’s confidence and perfection.

Voodoo Queens - Chocolate Revenge

Voodoo Queens were formed by Anjali, who left as drummer of Mambo Taxi and took up singing/shouting duties. Again part of the UK Riot Grrrrl scene Voodoo Queens were lauded as being one of the few Asian bands, along with Cornershop who were able to break into the UK mainstream. It was felt within the band however their background sometimes was more important than the music to those who wrote for such publications as NME.

Super model........ do you mean superficial !!!

Mambo Taxi - In Love With

Mambo taxi were around during the early 90's and were part of the much heralded (by someone) Riot Grrrrrl scene. Inspired by garage rock and punk this was their only album release.

Your Code Name Is:Milo - Ignoto

Ignoto was the first actual album after the all roads to fault debut mini album, singles included Schteeve, Rapt. Dept, and 17. I saw them them live around this time at Southampton Joiners, It was one of those summer nights where it was so hot the sweat was dripping off the walls,

Your Code Name Is:Milo - All Roads To Fault

Your Code Name Is:Milo , even the name sounds fantastic, all roads to fault was released in 2004

Yourcodenameis:milo's style has been influenced by earlier post-hardcore/progressive bands, especially Cave In, Shellac, Fugazi and At the Drive-In. Themes such as space/sci-fi dominate their sound and elements, such as track titles and artwork
