Renaldo and the Loaf - Olleh Olleh Rotcod

Pompey mentalists !!

Olleh Olleh Rotcod was a compilation of rarities.... aren't they all rare when no one has heard of the band ???

Renaldo and the Loaf was an English musical duo active in the late seventies and most of the eighties, consisting of a pathologist(David Janssen or "Ted The Loaf") and an architect (Brian Poole or "Renaldo Malpractice", most often simply "Renaldo M"). By their own assertion, they achieved their unique sound in part by striving to get unnatural synthesizer-like sounds using only what instruments they had available (acoustic ones). To that end they routinely used muffled and de-tuned instruments, and, often to striking effect, tape loops / manipulation. The two released four full-length albums, one collection, various songs on compilation albums, and several self-produced demos. They were "discovered" by The Residents when Brian dropped off a tape at Ralph Records headquarters in San Francisco, during a visit to the U.S. After being signed to Ralph, they collaborated with The Residents on Title in Limbo. The first Renaldo and the Loaf album, Songs for Swinging Larvae, was released in 1981 on Ralph Records. By 1989, the collaboration had lost its steam, and the duo disbanded after recording a sea shanty, "Haul on the Bowline," which appeared only on a Ralph various artists release. Brian/Renaldo contributed to sporadic recordings in the 1990s. In 2006 upon the launch of the new Renaldo & the Loaf web site, the duo were reunited for the first time in the better part of two decades.
Director Graham Whifler produced a short film in 1980, Songs for Swinging Larvae, from the album of the same name. The film concerns a kidnapped child and raises questions of home and human relationship. The film has since been banned from television and film festivals due to its controversial nature. "Larvae" was premiered at an art museum. It was included first in the Residents' 5 Minute Movies video collection, and later on the comprehensive Icky Flix DVD.

The Belltower - Popdropper

I really dont know too much about the The Belltower, I often saw there name on flyers for gigs with bands like Chapterhouse and Moose but never got the chance to see them live. Its a pretty cool record actually although a little dated now but definitely of its time as they say.reading wiki it seems they came from ultra cool New York but moved to London to be part of the shoegazing scene prevalent during the early 90's, released a couple of singles and this, there only album, members of the band later went on to play with Luna and Fountains of Wayne.... not a bad little CV.

Jonathan Fire*Eater - Tremble Under Boom Lights

Released in 1996 this  came to my attention via an NME free CD which had the excellent "Give Me Daughters" on it, as well as some other rather good stuff i seem to remember..... they soon signed to major label Geffen and went on to international stardom........... oh ok they didn't , they released a pretty average album and split soon after! a shame really as the band were often touted as the next big thing etc etc.....

3 of the band formed The Walkmen and are still around today and are somewhat of an underground sensation........ if you've never heard their single "The Rat" you should do....

1. The Search For Cherry Red

2. Make It Precious

3. Give Me Daughters

4. The Beautician

5. Winston Plum

6. When Prince Was A Kid

Stone Roses - Blackpool Live 1989

Sometimes you need something you are comfortable with.. im not going to compare this with your favourite armchair or that spot in the pub where you feel at home but you get my drift.... come back to what you know and all that... The Stone Roses released the best album ever, ok i know you disagree but that's my opinion, im sticking to it and im right! the gigs they played around this time in 1989 were talked about as something mythical, they were pretty immense however spike island was shite by the way! There were around 4500 people inside the Empress Ballroom on this particular summer night....from legend and listening now there seems to be around 450,000 who claim to have been there! Enjoy the gig, its one of the best............

The Dead 60's - The Dead 60's

The 1960s may be dead for this Liverpool quartet, but the 1980s are alive and well. The opening track sets the scene: For the first few seconds, you'd swear it was Gang of Four--by way of Franz Ferdinand--with that angular, yet bouncy guitar attack, but then the vocals come in. Could it be Joe Strummer, Joe Jackson...Ted Leo? No matter, "Riot Radio" is a great post-post-punk track any way you look at it (that's Matt McManamon on the mic, by the way). Up there with, yes, "Take Me Out," "Apply Some Pressure" (Maximo Park), and "I Predict a Riot" (Kaiser Chiefs). On the rest of their debut, the Dead 60s distinguish themselves from the current UK guitar-rock crop with shorter songs and more ska, dub, and "Rock the Casbah"-style dance beats, which means they would fit just as comfortably on a bill with Bloc Party as The Rapture.

Where have Hundred Reasons gone? not a question many ask probably however maybe they should! seemingly vanished for good this is as good as anything released around the same time and stands the test of time since, it contains at least 4 great singles and the gigs they played at the time were noisy, sweaty and not to be missed

Catatonia - Way Beyond Blue

"Forgive Me If I Seem To Be Impatient And Obscene"

Forget the sales figures, forget the magazine album reviews claiming International Velvet was their finest hour, this was them at their best. Classed as run of the mill indie chancers and more famed for Cerys' legendary drinking ablilities than music this is a must for any fan. This album has an almost magical quality, From the drum beats of Lost Cat, the urgency of Bleed to the dreamy Way Beyond Blue and Gyda Gwen (hidden track), this is an album you cannot fail to enjoy, Someone once said the sign of a great album is one that ages well, and this is surely one that could be classed as just that.

Lost Cat
Sweet Catatonia
Some Half Baked Ideal Called Wonderful
You've Got A Lot To Answer For
Infantile
Dream On

Reuben - Racecar Is Racecar Backwards

Reuben's long awaited first ever full length record, recorded between July and November 2003. The record was beset by problems even before it started - after three years of indie releases, major deal fall-throughs and constantly being asked when they were bringing out an album, the band decided to take the matter into their own hands and record the album with their friend and ex drummer Jason Wilcock at his home-made studio in Chobham, and you know what ? it was f'kin awesome...... now if you had the pleasure to see Reuben live you'd know what a great band they were, Jamie the frontman was as easily adept at stand up comedy as he was fronting one of the great lost bands of the last 10 years.... im not pissing around Reuben should have been huge... they were that good, check out elsewhere on the blog for third album "In Nothing We Trust"
