The Hippie Mafia

The Happy Mondays have reformed !! ... Er yes again i hear you cry !!

Now in the case of the aforementioned Happy Mondays the cash had obviously ran out, however it is the original line up including Rowetta so if they haven't killed each other beforehand im off to see them live..

Which brings us to the madchester bonanza happening right now.. Stone Roses at Heaton Park , Inspiral Carpets with new/old singer Stephen Holt back onboard and even New Order minus hooky are doing gigs too.... now if i was a former member of Northside id be reaching for that guitar and the phone!

So in the spirit of this revival il post some new music :)... sort of....

The Hippy Revival contain someone called Gaz Whelan... The sharp eyed amongst you will know he was (and i guess now is) the drummer for Happy Mondays, This comes on like Black Grape and is alright which is not the worst crime in history The band supported Beady Eye on there last tour.. oh what a tangled web these Manchester lot weave...

Pusheman - Floored

Pusherman , The ulitimate in stoned indie rock!

Having been signed by Oasis manager Marcus Russell to his Ignition label was initially the major talking point for Pusherman and gained the band column inches and plenty of press that otherwise they might have found hard to come by. By the time Floored wad released the band were firmly standing on there own feet and were well respected throughout indie circles.

The band were in the main part from Portsmouth, and formed from the ashes of a band called S.K.A.W.  Andy Frank and Yank the lead singers told tales of drug use and psychedelia that only The Verve could really match , live the band were amazing , that feeling you get running down your spine... or when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up... that was Pusherman.

Huggy Bear - Taking The Rough With The Smooch

Boy Girl Revolutionaries!!

Huggy Bear were for a brief time in 1993 the most talked about band in the country, the fact they refused to do the mainstream press somehow worked in there favour as the weekly inkies clamoured for the latest news... one riotous performance on The Word cemented the bands place in folklore... they got chucked off stage and out of the building! In the days of X Factor and the like its pretty hard to see how a band like this could exist today but lets thank fuck they did....

Roit Grrrl..... Ramshackle.....Punk..... DIY....

Sulk - Back in Bloom

A while ago i wrote about a band called The Ruling Class, fans of The Charlatans and Stone Roses would have loved them , they've had a bit of a reincarnation as Sulk now... still the same sound which is actually quite fantastic... check out the videos below

Frazier Chorus - Ray

Released in 1991 Ray was the second album by Brighton band Frazier Chorus, I bought the Nothing EP on 12" at the time and played it to death. Think along the lines of the Orb and The Beloved maybe for references to the chilled indie dance tunes on this.

The band itself were a 3 piece but made use of a multitude of session hands to fill out the sound , Ian Broudie was roped in to produce and his right hand man Cenzo Townsend was the session engineer, the 2 had previously worked on Northside's records... there was no way i was passing up a listen after learning that

PJ Harvey - Peel Sessions 1991 - 2004

Peel Session collections always hold a special place in my music collection, this is one of the best actually, always a favourite of Peel this collects Polly Jean Harveys sessions together and makes a pretty credible album. From a singer who has won 2 mercury music prizes this sometime's basic,  almost raw collection of songs spanning 13 years is a great body of work.

The Breeders - Last Splash

Was it only me that was disappointed that this years X Factor single wasn't the breeders song "Cannonball" ?? it turned out to be some rhubarb by Damien Rice... Oh well...

Kim Deal is officially cool... no ifs or buts im afraid.. A one time member of The Pixies and here with her own beast The Breeders. Out of the band went Tanya Donelly (ex Throwing Muses now Belly) and in came sister Kelley for this, the bands second album, after debut POD

This was a wonderful album , full of changes of direction and surprises, it perplexed as many people as excited them i suppose though . It had perfect pop moments in Canninball and Divine Hammer and veered off into surf rock in Roi and Flipside.....  The Prodigy even sampled SOS for Firestarter !!

The Band never really followed this up in any meaningful way which was a real shame

Curve - Doppleganger

Here we go into 2012 then with Curve's debut album and there best..

Doppleganger was released in 1992 and was way ahead of its time... Shoegaze ?? Goth Rock ?? who cares it was amazing, fresh and like nothing around at the time. Toni Halliday was the bands lead singer and seeing them live you couldn't take your eyes off her, she had such a stage presence
