Gene - Rising For Sunset

I absolutely loved Gene, with a passion so great that it pains me i will never get to see them live again,  without a shadow of a doubt they were one of the most underrated band of the mid to late 90's. led by lead singer Martin Rossiter, soothsayer the the stars and driven along by Steve Mason on guitar the band were more than the sum of its parts,

Rising For Sunset was a pioneering release for the band, streamed live on the internet initially at a time when the music industry were running scared of the net, over 60,000 viewers/listeners live and a further 100k of sales afterwards... alright if you ask me...

Screeper - English Meltdown

Iv mentioned the genius of David Jones a few times on the blog before... Well here is probably his finest hour... Screeper and English Meltdown..

Screeper came out of Portsmouth around the mid 90's, mashing up samples, guitars and a mad dancer (who later played bass but we wont mention that) sampling bands such as Captain Beefheart and Can should and could be a pointer but only if i'm being lazy, the music goes beyond that, Davids voice floating over the beats laid down by keyboard and technical wizard Steve...... hot sweaty gigs that were more an art performance than your average indie club night meant the band gained fans such as John Peel and the single The Golden Boy EP with lead track Can Fever garnered extensive national radio play...

Screeper started out life as The Spinner Dolphins and went onto become The Autons via Reinhard.... You can find The Autons and Davids latest solo work elsewhere on here.

Earl Brutus - Tonight, You Are The Special One

Fans of 80's / 90's madchester and indie would have bumped into various members of Earl Brutus already, the band formed not really from the ashes of World Of Twist but with a few of the former bands members in tow.

Musically Earl Brutus managed to perfect the art of looking ramshackle, unhinged and mental in equal measures whilst at the same time making a perfectly agreeable racket.

According to the font of all knowledge that is wiki the band reformed as "The Pre New" in 2010 playing old World Of Twist and Earl Brutus songs

Appliance - Are You Earthed?

Post Rock / Krautrock / Experimental etc etc....

Appliance were on the Mute label which gives a pretty clear indication as to the sound they produced, This was the bands third and last album and definitely the best, mixing live bass, drums and guitars with an electronic backdrop gave the band that air of cool and artiness...

in 2010 the band released a retrospective compilation of early recordings, b sides and peel sessions, well worth hunting down

Audioweb - Fireworks City

Audioweb were probably one of those unlucky bands that didn't fit into any easy pigeonhole and as such suffered from a little indifference from both  the press and music buying public... let me say if you missed out on this band and haven't heard this album, you missed a treat!

They came out of Manchester, as so many great bands have done, lead singer Martin Merchant had soul, ska and rock music running through his music and this all fused together as Audioweb.

you can read what the NME said about the album here , they were wrong by the way as they often are... and go to the usual place below for the tunes....
