Beady Eye - Japan Benefit Gig Live @ Brixton Acadamy 3rd April 2011

Eat Junk was out and about last night to see Beady Eye in Brighton, The album left us a bit underwhelmed so it was a surprise that the live stuff was so good, Liam is of course a great front man and carried the few average tunes until the better ones turned up in the set

Here is the set they played in London earlier this month, includes a cover of the Beatles tune "Across The Universe" ... and here was me thinking it was Oasis who were the Beatles cover band!

Yellow Tail (Intro)
Four Letter Word
Beatles and Stones
Millionaire
The Roller
Bring The Light
Standing On The Edge of The Noise
Kill For a Dream
Man Of Misery
The Morning Son
Sons of the Stage
Across the Universe

Idlewild - Support Your Local Poet - Live @ North Star Center Shetland Isles 2002

A Favourite of Eat Junk , Idlewild were described as sounding like a fall down a flight of stairs.... that was pretty much where the attraction was.. .early songs found here like Film for The Future and Little Discourage clattered along and made a fair old racket, older tunes took a little folky direction and might even be compared to REM.... not something to be immensely proud of but im sure it could have been worse!

Anyway the support your local poet tour combines some early and some later tunes and found the band on top form......

1. Shetland Interview
2. (I am) What I am Not
3. Little Discourage
4. You Held the World in Your Arms
5. I Am A Message
6. Idea Track
7. These Wooden Ideas
8. American English
9. When I Argue I See Shapes
10. Century After Century
11. I Am Happy To Be Here Tonight
12. Rusty
13. Stay The Same
14. Roseability
15. In A Remote Part
16. A Film For The Future

Inspiral Carpets - Life

In 1990, the Inspiral Carpets had the world at their feet. A new album destined for the top of the charts, a t-shirt empire that probably brought in more cash than their records and a range of haircuts copied by students throughout the land... having "the boon" was immense......
To give their album an extra push, they released some branded milk bottles, which arrived in time to give the album sales a healthy nudge. With a play on the "cool as fuck" logo, it read "cool as milk", featuring a cow in shades, album details and an image of the band on the rear. fantastic i think you'll agree!!
These days the milk bottles change hands for around £10-£15 which is pretty bizarre!
Anyway here is the album that all the fuss and media buzz was about, entitled "life" it was a blast...lumped in unfairly the madchester scene (but probably helped by it) because they had the misfortune to come from Oldham, The Inspirals had a sound distinctly different from peers such as the happy mondays and stone roses,

Radiohead and the NME !

I still read the NME... There iv said it, its out in the open, I know.... im not proud and i should think about the children but hey, i do still read it, now that massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders in some Alco Anon style meeting situation im feeling better.... well, anyway onto the point in hand...

The fucking NME have slagged off Radiohead!! Is this allowed to happen?? Have they wrote the unwritable?? common perception is that Thom Yorke and his band could fart the national anthem at the queens funeral and the NME would piss there pants over it.......... it seems not anymore, they have dared to scribble a 2 page epic on the subject

Now eat junk of course owns all the albums and has seen Radiohead in all there live glory however our own favourite album still remains The Bends..... iv never really got Kid A or OK Computer, both seen as some sort of masterpiece, and as for In Rainbows and King of Limbs..... half arsed, half baked rubbish

Oh and i forgot as you'll see above Lady GaGa is on this weeks cover half naked, i know what your all asking......where did she tuck it???

The NME and Radiohead

Burn down the disco

Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
Says nothing to me about my life

Happy Mondays - Forty Five EP

Happy Mondays before the drugs took hold!

released in 1985 the forty five EP was before my time but its sheer genius... simple and captivating and thats when the Happy Mondays were at there best imho.

Thousand Yard Stare - Hands On

I was at something called ( rather grandly ) the Slough Music Festival in 1991..... what i hear you cry? It was a one day event full of Thames Valley shoegazers and indie kids..... It was summer maybe the month before Reading Festival i think and hot...so pretty good fun actually...

Ride headlined the main stage, with Curve, Slowdive, Revolver, Soul Family Sensation, The Mock Turtles and Thousand Yard Stare also on the bill. T.Y.S. stole the show and i went on to become a bit of a fan following them about on tour supporting Carter USM, James and headlining with support from Sp!n who went on to become half of Gene..... oh Gene...more on you later

Hands On was released early 1992 and i played my copy to near death.... it actually stands the test of time pretty well too....

Beth Orton - Super Pinky Mandy

Eat Junk loves Beth Orton.....and Eat Junk loves this........

in 1993, 3 years before she released her first EP and 4 years before her first full album, Beth Orton collaborated with William Orbit as part of a duo called Spill. They released a cover version of a John Martyn song, “Don’t Wanna Know About Evil,” that led to an appearance by Beth on Orbit’s “Strange Cargo III” album, which led in turn to a album they did together featuring Beth’s vocals. They called it SuperPinkyMandy, named after a rag doll which she bought at a jumble sale at the age of six. The album had 10 tracks and was released in Japan only, with a very limited pressing of 5,000 copies. Amazingly, even though Beth has gone on to great international success and is a much beloved recording artist, “Superpinkymandy” has never been released and, were it not for the inclusion of 2 songs from the album in “Pass in Time: The Definitive Collection” in 2003, “Superpinkymandy” would have remained in complete obscurity. The last song on the CD, “Release Me,” is a good example of the album’s sound, but every song on the album is terrific and it makes you wonder why in the world it has never seen the light of day. Superpinkymandy also contains a completely different take on the song “She Cries Your Name,” which became a hit for Beth when it was included on her “Trailer Park” album.

Scarfo - Luxury Plane Crash

One of the most exciting new live acts on the London scene of the mid-90s, Scarfo were led by Jamie Hince (vocals, guitar), a man possessed of extraordinary self-belief and steely convictions: "The thing people should realise is that music is life-threateningly important. People should want to take a bullet for their favourite band. It's a punk thing. Music should be fucking dangerous and subversive, and it just isn't like that any more." Scarfo formed in Andover, before relocating to Deptford, London, in early 1995. After a handful of performances in the capital, they signed with Deceptive Records, but not before recording a debut single for Fierce Panda Records. The 12 tracks on Luxury Plane Crash, characterized by Hince's obsession with low-life living and crime, were at least the equal of the bands who had begun to steal Scarfo's thunder - among them Placebo, led by Hince's old collegiate friend Brian Molko. In the early 00s Hince linked up with Alison Mosshart to form the duo The Kills.
